Aug 11th, 2009 at 4:00PM: Volunteer one day to a registered 501C3 nonprofit organization and your next stay at a Sage Hospitality property could be free. The hotel group is offering a limited number of free rooms at each of its 53 hotels around the country to those who can verify - with a signed letter from the organization - that they have donated eight or more hours of their time to charity.

Aug 11th, 2009 at 11:30AM: Airline baggage fees just keep going up, and there seems to be no end in sight. With few airlines left that don't charge for checked bags, travelers who can't manage to get everything they need into a carry-on bag could end up paying some hefty fees. One Canadian company has come up with a plan to help.
Zero Baggage promises to provide travelers with an "environmentally responsible, anxiety-free ...

Aug 9th, 2009 at 11:00AM:
I arrived in Seattle on my birthday last week, which just happened to be the city's hottest day in history. Temperatures across Puget Sound reached 106 degrees! Needless to say, I needed a break from the heat -- and a break from long hours of driving up the northern California and Oregon coast. A mini-vacation on Bainbridge Island was an ideal break from both the heat, the car, and the city.

Aug 8th, 2009 at 11:00AM: Because howler monkeys and koala bears are just so passe, Budget Travel has come up with a list of 14 crazy-looking and odd animals that you can visit in their natural habitats.
There's the hooked-nose proboscis monkey of Borneo, the google-eyed tarsier from the Philippines, and the Tasmanian echidna, which has a pouch like a marsupial, quills like a porcupine and the long sticky tongue of an ...

Aug 3rd, 2009 at 3:30PM: It took three trips through South Dakota before we made it to The Corn Palace, a mecca of sorts in Mitchell, a town that seems as if it might be in the middle of nowhere. The middle of nowhere is a significant detail. Back in 1892, settlers to South Dakota wanted to showcase the harvest bounty of the state and attract people to the area.
If you've driven through South Dakota in this decade--it's ...

Jul 31st, 2009 at 12:35PM: If you're looking for travel deals, try a state fair. If any state fair is like Ohio's, it's looking for ways to entice people to come by offering discounts and deals, particularly on food.
According to this Toledo Blade article, the "staycation" folks are the ones the Ohio State Fair is courting. As a result, this particular fair is a coupon clipper's dream. Many coupons found on the fair's ...

Jul 28th, 2009 at 3:00PM: Friends of mine recently returned from a trip to Arizona with news of a hands-down favorite day that pleased the whole family. Slide Rock State Park near Sedona made the parents, a 16-year-old girl, an 11-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl happy at exactly the same time. Amazing. For anyone who has traveled with an age range of children of both sexes, an activity that fits everyone's desires and ...

Jul 26th, 2009 at 9:30AM: I have slept in a car once on a road trip. When I drove from Odense, Denmark to Paris where people are smiling more than when I was there, my friend and I pulled off of the road somewhere to sleep. We could have been in France. I can't remember. What I do remember is that it was not comfortable. We were in a Peugeot station wagon, so space wasn't the problem, but we didn't have enough bedding and ...

Jul 21st, 2009 at 5:00PM: The title kind of says it -- except for the part where it's for your second passenger. Or up to five additional passengers. It's the Family Fare Sale. Nice! People who travel in pairs or groups know the pain of paying equal to ride in the same van all too well. If it's double the rate to travel with a companion in a shared-ride, why not just take a cab? Supershuttle to the rescue! They're running ...

Jul 15th, 2009 at 5:30PM: We always try to let you know when there's a great new way to find travel deals, and DealBase is one of the best yet. The fashionistas among you may be familiar with a site called ShopItToMe.com -- this is that for travel. I'll explain. Basically, you go to DealBase.com and tell them what you want. Four or more star hotels in Vegas for under $300? Any hotel in New York for under $100? Whatever ...

Jul 6th, 2009 at 6:00PM: Aloha, Gadling readers! Another week is upon us. Here are this Monday's Gadlinks.
Do you hate babies and kids on planes as much as I do? Well, here are a few possible solutions to this unruly passenger problem. I put in my vote for a kids free zone on the plane. What do you say?
As much as those seatback TV screens are handy, here's an article from Jaunted that gives us another, more ...

Jun 12th, 2009 at 7:00PM: It's Aloha Friday as they say here on the islands -- and a very special Friday at that! Today marks the beginning of the 62nd annual King Kamehameha Day festivities in Hawaii, so you can count on me enjoying the parade, draping ceremony, fun, and sun that lasts through the weekend. Here are some other cool "happenings" going on in the travel blogosphere to jump start your weekend:

Jun 3rd, 2009 at 1:00PM: Just one hour north of Boston, sandwiched between the Merrimack and Ipswich Rivers and the Atlantic Ocean is the adorable town of Newburyport -- population: 7,500. This quaint coastal town, with its New England charm, boutique shops along State Street, and brick-lined pedestrian mall, makes a perfect weekend getaway. The great thing about Newburyport is that it's easily accessible by train or by ...

May 9th, 2009 at 1:00PM: Sometimes a Gadling post grabs one's attention and you think, "Gaad!"
That's what I thought when I read Scott's post about the flesh eating bacteria that killed a man while he was on a cruise. I'm heading off on my first cruise in August. Naturally, a flesh-eating bacteria cruise story has impact.
There are other posts that make a person ponder about life in general. That's what happened ...

Apr 26th, 2009 at 11:00AM: One could say that any travel in India is an adventure and that could be accurate--even if you have loads of cash and are sticking close to swank establishments. If you head out of the mainstream, adventure is guaranteed. One option to add some thrills into your trip is to take in a rafting trip.
Arthur Max's article published in The Columbus Dispatch gives details about his six-day rafting trip ...

Apr 12th, 2009 at 10:30AM: According to tourism officials, advance bookings at Yellowstone National Park are down 13% this year which means that this summer would be a great time to put gas into a vehicle and head west. Gas prices are half of what they were last year and lodging is not particularly expensive anyway. With less crowds waiting for Old Faithful or the other geysers to do their shows or seeking out wildlife ...
